Presidential Proclamation No. 242 declares September 5 to October 5 of every year as National Teachers’ Month, as well as Republic Act No. 10743 entitled An Act Declaring the Fifth Day of October of Every Year as National Teachers’ Day and its Implementing Rules and Regulations, and the designation of the World Teachers’ Day every 5th of October by the United Nations Education and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO).
The Department of Education (DepEd), in coordination with the National Teachers Day Coordinating Council (NTDCC) and the National Teachers’ Month Coordinating Council (NTMCC), will celebrate the National Teachers’ Month (NTM) from September 5 to October 5, 2018, with October 5, 2018 being observed as the National Teachers’ Day (NTD) and World Teachers Day (WTD). This year’s theme is “Gurong Piipino: Turo Mo, Kinabukasan Ko”. - Source: DepEd Memorandum No. 130, s 2018
But more than these mandates from both local and international authorities, why do we need to have a month-long celebration for teachers? Are we just compelled to celebrate it because of these laws? Are we celebrating it for the sake of compliance?
It feels good to recognize the efforts of our dear teachers. Pero hanggang Teachers Month na lang ba ang recognition? For so many years, I have been reading a lot of news and been witnessing tungkol sa mababang sweldo ng mga guro. Hindi maayos na classrooms. Kulang na school supplies. Poor school facilities and learning equipment. Kulang na text books. Kulang na guro. The worst was the current news about sa isang guro na nag-kitil ng sariling buhay diumano dahil sa pressure at hirap ng mga gawain bilang isang guro.

Hindi madali maging guro. Oo, inaamin ko, when I was a kid, never ko pinangarap maging guro. Kasi bata pa ako marami na akong naririnig na underprivileged ang mga guro lalo na sa benepisyo at sweldo. Dagdag pa dyan ang pagkakaroon ng image ng isang guro bilang isang maraming utang - kabila-kabilang utang! Minsan pa, tampulan ng katatawanan dahil sa pagtitinda ng ng tocino, langgonisa at sari-saring produkto sa kanyang mga estudyante at sa mga magulang ng ng mga eskwela. Pero bakit nga ba nagagawa itong mga bagay na ito ng ibang guro?
Hindi madali maging guro. Naririnig ko pa dati, may mga gurong nasusuhulan diumano ng mga magulang para lang isama sa Honor's List ang kanilang mga anak. Totoo ba? Minsan, napapagbintangan pa na kinukurakot ang class fund o pondo ng PTA. At ito pa, may mga guro daw na nakikipagsabwatan sa mga PTA officers, diumano, ino-over price daw mga projects ng PTA. Ano ba?! At ito pa, ang mga guro daw, lalo na sa public schools, ay mga tsismosa at patama sa oras ng trabaho?! At ang nakakatawa pa, pati daw pagpapa-photocopy ng test papers ng mga guor ay ginagawang negosyo?! Kabweset! The funniest is pag daw Education course ang kinuha mo sa college, ibig sabihin mahirap ka. Status symbol?!. Ewan ko kung ano basis nila pero for me it's Gggrrrrrr. Boom!
Hindi madali maging guro. Pag ang estudyante hindi natuto, sasabihin ng iba, bobo ang teacher. May maririnig ka pang, "Pano kaya sya naging teacher?" Pag naman pinagbuti mo trabaho sabihin sayo ang "higpit" na teacher at may maririnig ka pa na pa-bibong teacher. Ano ba talaga? Nataasan mo ng konti boses estudyante mo, sasabihin abusado. Magsusumbong na agad kay Tulfo. hahaha O kaya humanda ka at magiging instant internet superstar ka kasi may viral video ka na!
Hindi madali maging guro. Pag guro ka parang celebrity ka din(mababa nga lang kita). Bawal ka magkamali. Bawal ka kakitaan ng masamang gawi. Bawal ka mag-post ng negative sa facebook. Bawal ka tumawa ng malakas sa public. Bawal ka magsuot ng hindi naayon sa iyong propesyon-may dress code hahaha. Bawal ka. Bawal ka. Bawal ka. Huminga pwede? Mataas na sweldo, pwede?
Truly, it's not easy to be a teacher. Teachers wear many hats. At sa dami nito, let's admit it, we cannot perform them best at the same time...but we are trying! Hindi magicians ang mga teachers. Hindi din kami santo. But I am not making excuses. Hindi po namin po namin kayang turuan mag English ang aming mga students in just a snap of our fingers. Hindi po namin kayang ituro ang magandang asal at isababuhay ng mga estudyante sa loob ng ilang araw. Hindi po namin kaya. May limitations din po kami. We have our own needs. We have our lives. We have our own families. Teachers need to be recognized. Teachers needs to be appreciated. Teacher needs to live.
In celebration of Teachers Month, magtulungan po tayo. Mga magulang, simbahan, gobyerno at kapwa mga ko mga guro. This celebration is worthless kung hindi po magbabago ang sistema natin. Sinasabi nyo, teachers are nation-builders and the future depends on us. Hindi po namin ito kaya kung kami-kami lang. Help us to get away from those negative connotations about teachers. Help us to build our own dreams. Help us to improve ourselves. Help us to mold our students to be better and more equipped citizens.

Let's also pray na sana bigyan pa lahat ng guro sa Pilipinas, private o public man, na bigyan pa sila ng dagdag ng lakas at tibay ng loob na magampanan ang kanilang mga tungkulin.
